How UK tradesman rates work
Tradesman rates in the UK are not regulated — they vary by trade, region, experience, demand, and whether the job is priced by the day or as a fixed quote. This makes it difficult to know whether the quote you have received is fair without a reliable benchmark.
Day rates vs fixed-price quotes
Most skilled tradespeople can quote either by the day or as a fixed price for the whole job. Day rates are common for ongoing work with uncertain scope (such as a full renovation), while fixed prices are standard for defined tasks like fitting a boiler or rewiring a room. Day rates typically do not include materials unless specifically agreed.
What drives regional variation?
London rates are consistently 40–80% higher than most other regions due to cost of living, travel time, and demand. The South East follows closely behind. Scotland, Wales, and the North East typically have the lowest rates. Within any region, urban areas command higher rates than rural locations.
Should I get multiple quotes?
For any job over £500, it is worth getting at least two or three quotes. This not only validates the price but gives you a sense of the tradesperson's approach and communication style — both of which matter when someone is working in your home. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.
Understanding VAT on trade quotes
Sole traders and small companies with turnover under the VAT threshold (currently £90,000) are not required to be VAT registered and may quote without VAT. Larger firms must charge 20% VAT. Always clarify whether a quote includes or excludes VAT before accepting.
