UK home energy grants in 2026

The UK government runs several schemes to help homeowners and renters improve their home's energy efficiency and reduce heating bills. Eligibility varies significantly between schemes — some are income-targeted, others are based on EPC rating, and some are region-specific.

The most important grants right now

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers up to £7,500 toward a heat pump and requires no income test — it is open to all owner-occupiers in England and Wales. ECO4 targets low-income households and can fund free insulation and heat pumps at no cost to eligible households. The Great British Insulation Scheme covers a broader group, including households in Council Tax bands A–D regardless of income.

How grants are applied for

Most energy improvement grants are not applied for directly by homeowners — they are accessed through Ofgem-registered installers who apply on your behalf. The best approach is to get a free survey from an accredited installer, who will assess your property, confirm eligibility, and handle the grant application. You should never pay upfront for a survey for ECO4 or GBIS work.

EPC ratings and why they matter

Many grants are restricted to properties with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G. If you do not know your current EPC, you can look it up free on the government's EPC register at gov.uk/find-energy-certificate. If your property does not have a valid EPC, an assessor can produce one for £60–£120.
